Thanks to Terryl Givens for a book that approaches the Book of Mormon in a scholarly way. His treatment of the book is refreshing. He gives the build up to Joseph Smith receiving the ancient record and then proceeds to explain the many ways that this book is what it says it is. It's very detailed, so it is not a quick read, but definitely worth your effort if you want to understand this book.

Very Informative

I've studied the Book of Mormon and its history throughout my life, and I learned several things I didn't know or think about before. The author did an excellent job of reviewing how the Book of Mormon was perceived both within and without the LDS church. I did not realize how little emphasis the Book of Mormon received doctrinally in the early days of the church. I was also very interested in his discussion of dialogic revelation and its emphasis in the Book of Mormon as opposed to the Bible. Being a lifelong member of the LDS church it had never occurred to me how much it was emphasized in the Book of Mormon compared to the Bible. This book is highly recommended for both LDS and non-LDS readers.

Only book of its kind?

I would probably give this book 4 stars if there were competitors, but there are not. The only problem with it (if it is a problem) is that the author clearly wants to give the Book of Mormon the benefit of the doubt where there are controversial issues. This results in a mild apologetic/partisan flavor. But no one should get their knickers in a twist over this. It is absurd to get upset about the fact that an author has a personal stand. A slight bias can be a problem, but only if it leads a writer to distortion and denial. I don't think Givens can be accused of either. His approach is to present the debate, and he gives lots of air-time to the critics as well as the apologists on a wide variety of topics. Nor does he invariably side with the apologists. At most, he doesn't always acknowledge the full implications of certain criticisms.

The real value of the book is the exposure it gives to the history and topography of Book of Mormon criticism. In this respect, the book is wonderful and (as far as I know) unique. It can only be of service.

While this venue not my favorite, Brenda Joyce handles it so well and demonstrates the versatility of her talent. I could not put it down. However, I would still enjoy being left off the "cliff hanger" of the "Deadly Series".

I couldnt stop reading these books...i say books because there are 3 books in this kindle download.I loved these books soo much!it captivates you and you cant put it down. with hot passion and heat you wont be able to put it down.i love the characters.you should buying this!i`ll say this if you buy it make sure you don`t have much to do for that day or week depending on how fast you read because you wont want to put it down.

Interesting beginning

In some ways, a short story is harder to write than a novel - especially for a story like this one that is fantasy/science fiction. I thought the author did a good job of introducing her world - there wasn't an explanation of why civilization collapsed, was the problem confined to the U.S. and other questions, but there didn't really need to be (at least for the story's purposes. I would like to see more explanation in the trilogy). The 2 main characters were interesting enough that I cared what happened to them. The writing style was easy to follow If a bit simplistic. It definitely interested me enough to purchase the first book of the series.

Eye-opening

As a businessperson, this book gave me a much deeper understanding of how all human economic systems depend on the ecology of plants. The life support system of the natural world can no longer be discounted by businesses and the market as an "externality". Indeed, nothing is less external to the human enterprise than the work of plants, for which there is no substitute at ANY price. Dr. Rice's photos and illustrations were a bonus!

It's not often that I have the pleasure to read a book that is comprehensive without being pedantic, focused but not belaboring, informative but not boring.

Kudos to Stanley A. Rice for his remarkable achievement.

This book is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the multifaceted interrelationship between plants and our planet.

About the Author

Dr. Dolores Gallagher Thompson is Professor of Research in the Dept. of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University School of Medicine. She has been both a funded clinical researcher and a practicing geropsychologist for over 20 years, focusing her work on intervention research. In the past decade she has devoted more time to understanding the unique problems faced by ethnically and culturally diverse family caregivers, and has developed intervention programs tailored to their needs. In addition, she was one of the founding members of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and enjoys teaching graduate students "the fundamentals" of CBT- in particular, how to implement this approach with older adults.

Dr. Ann Steffen is Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of Clinical Training at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Her teaching, research and clinical interests all focus on mental health and aging, with a particular focus on the development and evaluation of community-based interventions for dementia family caregivers.

Dr. Larry W. Thompson is currently Professor Emeritus from both Stanford University School of Medicine and the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology. He is also an active clinician/ mental health consultant to one of the local counties in northern CA where he has had the opportunity to work with bipolar patients and those with more severe mental disorders. Larry has authored a recent text on the use of CBT with bipolar individuals and is now working on a project to adapt CBT for use with depressed older adults of Asian ancestry – particularly Chinese Americans.
