A Little Light on the Laurens

Oh "Devil", where are you? I would read a shopping list if it was written by the woman who gifted us with the "Bar Cynster", but A Season of Scandal was a disappointment. There was no heat, no passion, no scandal. I coudn't shake the feeling that both of these stories were outlines rushed into print before Ms Laurens' magic touch added all the texture and richness of character that is the hallmark of her style. The truth is, I just didn't care what happened to any of the characters. I didn't know them well enough. Normally, the characters in a Stephanie Laurnes' book sizzle off the page - these were bearly lukewarm. This is not a bad book. It is just that all of her other books are so very very good.

Tame early fare from Stephanie Laurens

"A Season for Scandal" is a compilation of two of Laurens' early novellas. Fans of the Bar Cynster series may be disappointed; even though these are regency romances, they are far tamer than the sensual Cynster series. Nevertheless, both stories are fun and have compelling Cynster-ish heroes. I found the heroine in "Tangled Reins" annoying - one of those spunky young ladies who proves her independence by doing exactly the stupid/dangerous thing the hero warns her not to do, thus allowing him to rescue her. The heroine in "Fair Juno" was more interesting - a widow whose former husband fell into disgrace and committed suicide. Unfortunately, Laurens doesn't develop the interesting emotionally angles here as fully as she might. Despite my complaints, these were fairly innocuous stories and a light, pleasant read.

Early Laurens - Not Cynster but still good.

Having fallen in love with the Cynsters, I have eagerly sought out all of the earlier Laurens novels. Thank you, publisher for reprinting these two novels and giving me a chance to read them.
Yes, these books definitely don't have the Cynster male OOOOMPH! but this is only because they are from a period where the reader received that OOOOMPH in a more subtle way, and not by reading every moment of the sexual encounter. It is apparent that these are books by Stephanie Laurens and it is interesting to see her earlier work as an author. Seduction and sex are in these two books, just as they are in the Cynster novels - just a little more quietly.
These early Laurens remind me of Georgette Heyer (whom I initially fell in love with through reading Devil's Cub, Convenient Marriage, These Old Shades, and others).
I gave 5 stars: good plot, good characters, good reading, good writing. All of this kept my interest and kept me reading.

Charles Dickens is a fantastic storyteller, and these novels are brought to life by their original illustrations, good to see what they'd have looked like back in the day. good value too!

Beautiful books, beautiful illustrations

Four masterpieces, but just a small sample of the writing of the prolific and endlessly creative Charles Dickens. His novels probably painted a more definitive picture of Victorian London than the work of any other writer. He created more memorable, brilliantly named characters than anyone except Shakespeare – and they live on in our minds long after we have read the books.

Good to have an excellently chosen set like this on one’s Kindle, well-formatted and enhanced by beautiful original illustrations.

Giant Step

This is an invaluable book for all therapists. Epstein does a masterful job of connecting analytic thought with Buddhist teachings. He apparently speaks from experience when he discusses the difficulties we all encounter along our paths. Then he goes a step further and shows how these insights can help direct the therapeutic encounter. This is a genuine, sincere, honest expression from the heart. I am very grateful.

Highly illuminating

I highly recommend this book for those who question the borderland between spirituality and psychotherapy. As a growth oriented psychotherapist, I have an ongoing curiosity about what defines psychotherapy as different from spiritual growth and realization. This book provides some key understandings of the correlations between buddhist practices and how they can be understood from a psychoanalytical perspective. Both camps benefit from this kind of intelligent communication between the two disciplines. I especially appreciated how concentration meditation can mislead a person into thinking they have "arrived" as they access a symbiotic experience, and not realize the further development of consciousness through the separation/individuation process, which unfolds out of this initial merged experience.

A backlog of academic articles

I'd really hoped that Epstein's latest book would be similar to his other books, but unfortunately it isn't. It's a book written more for therapists than for people in general and features previously published academic articles. While the prose isn't too terribly hard to read or filled with academic jargon, it's clear that the intended audience probably has a deeper schooling in therapy than the average reader would.

It's an interesting perspective on Epstein's psychotherapeutic history and how his perspective has changed, but if you're looking for something, I'd recommend reading his earlier books instead.

Thanks to Terryl Givens for a book that approaches the Book of Mormon in a scholarly way. His treatment of the book is refreshing. He gives the build up to Joseph Smith receiving the ancient record and then proceeds to explain the many ways that this book is what it says it is. It's very detailed, so it is not a quick read, but definitely worth your effort if you want to understand this book.

I've studied the Book of Mormon and its history throughout my life, and I learned several things I didn't know or think about before. The author did an excellent job of reviewing how the Book of Mormon was perceived both within and without the LDS church. I did not realize how little emphasis the Book of Mormon received doctrinally in the early days of the church. I was also very interested in his discussion of dialogic revelation and its emphasis in the Book of Mormon as opposed to the Bible. Being a lifelong member of the LDS church it had never occurred to me how much it was emphasized in the Book of Mormon compared to the Bible. This book is highly recommended for both LDS and non-LDS readers.

Only book of its kind?

I would probably give this book 4 stars if there were competitors, but there are not. The only problem with it (if it is a problem) is that the author clearly wants to give the Book of Mormon the benefit of the doubt where there are controversial issues. This results in a mild apologetic/partisan flavor. But no one should get their knickers in a twist over this. It is absurd to get upset about the fact that an author has a personal stand. A slight bias can be a problem, but only if it leads a writer to distortion and denial. I don't think Givens can be accused of either. His approach is to present the debate, and he gives lots of air-time to the critics as well as the apologists on a wide variety of topics. Nor does he invariably side with the apologists. At most, he doesn't always acknowledge the full implications of certain criticisms.

The real value of the book is the exposure it gives to the history and topography of Book of Mormon criticism. In this respect, the book is wonderful and (as far as I know) unique. It can only be of service.
